Location, Access & Logistics

Where is Legion San Diego located?

Legion American Jiu Jitsu HQ is located at 7550 Miramar Road, Suite 330, San Diego, CA 92126. We're in the Miramar/Mira Mesa area of San Diego, just minutes from the I-15, I-805, and the 52, with easy access from MCAS Miramar, UTC, Sorrento Valley, Scripps Ranch, Carmel Valley, and Kearny Mesa. Free parking is available on-site.

What San Diego neighborhoods does Legion serve?

Legion San Diego draws members from across San Diego County. Most regular members come from Mira Mesa, Miramar, Sorrento Valley, Scripps Ranch, UTC, Carmel Valley, La Jolla, Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Poway, Rancho Peñasquitos, Del Mar, Solana Beach, and Tierrasanta, but we have students who drive in from as far as Encinitas, Chula Vista, El Cajon, and even San Marcos. The HQ at 7550 Miramar Road is centrally located for North County and Central San Diego commuters.

Is there parking at Legion San Diego?

Yes. Legion San Diego has free on-site parking at the 7550 Miramar Road complex. The lot is shared with other businesses in the building but rarely fills up, even during peak evening classes (5:30 PM and 6:30 PM). There's no time limit, no parking fee, and no permit required.

What are Legion San Diego's hours?

Legion San Diego HQ runs classes seven days a week, with adult and kids programs spanning early morning, midday, and evening time slots. Specific class times vary by program and day; see our full schedule for the current week. Doors generally open 15 minutes before the first class of the day (6 AM) and close after the last evening class wraps up.

Is Legion San Diego open on holidays?

Legion San Diego does not really close. We hold open mats on holidays — sometimes for members only, other times open to everyone.

Is there childcare at Legion while I train?

Legion does not currently offer formal childcare during adult classes. However, many parent-members coordinate around our family-friendly schedule — adult classes often run alongside or just after kids classes, so families can train together or in shifts. Check the schedule for matching adult/kids time slots.

Can I bring my kid to wait while I train at Legion?

Older kids can wait in the viewing area while a parent trains, but Legion doesn't supervise unattended children. For younger kids, we recommend pairing your training with a kids class slot so they're on the mats too — most parents find this works better than splitting attention.

02

Schedule & Class Structure

How many classes per week can I take at Legion?

Most Legion San Diego memberships include unlimited classes within your tier. Beginners typically train 2–3 times per week for the first month, then ramp up. More experienced members commonly train 3–5 times per week, and competitors or full-time enthusiasts train daily. Train as much as your body and life allow — and rest is part of training, too.

Does Legion offer early morning or late evening classes?

Yes. Legion San Diego runs early morning classes at 6 AM for shift workers and pre-work training, and late evening classes ending around 8:45 PM. We deliberately offer time slots across the day so members with rotating schedules — including active-duty service members — can find a class that fits.

What's the difference between Beginner, Fundamentals, and Intermediate-Advanced classes at Legion?

Beginner Course (5 weeks) is for total newcomers — a structured curriculum that compresses what most academies teach over five months into 5 weeks. Fundamentals is the next layer: a daily ongoing class for white belts who've graduated the Beginner Course or have prior experience. Intermediate-Advanced is for blue belts and above (and approved purple-track white belts) — 90-minute classes with deeper technique, specific sparring games, and live rounds.

Can I drop into any class at Legion?

Members in good standing can drop into any class their tier permits. Beginners stay within Beginner and Fundamentals classes for the first weeks; once you've graduated the Beginner Course you can attend Fundamentals freely. Intermediate-Advanced is reserved for blue belts and above (or pre-approved white belts). Visitors with verified rank can drop into level-appropriate classes — see the visitor page.

What's Legion's No-Gi schedule?

Legion San Diego runs No-Gi classes twice per day Mon–Fri and once on weekends. No-Gi training emphasizes wrestling-influenced jiu-jitsu without the friction and grips of the gi. Many members train both, while others train exclusively no-gi. We have members who have earned all their belts in no-gi and never owned a gi — we pride ourselves on being an academy that can offer those three levels equally.

Does Legion have a self-defense-only program?

Legion San Diego doesn't offer a separate "self-defense" class because we believe the most effective self-defense is the foundational jiu-jitsu we teach in every Beginner Course and Fundamentals class. The techniques you learn — controlling distance, closing range, surviving on the ground, ending a confrontation safely — are self-defense, applied. If your primary goal is self-defense, the 5-Week Beginner Course is exactly the right entry point.

Does Legion have an open mat?

Yes. Legion San Diego runs a Sunday Open Mat that has become one of the best-known open mats in San Diego. Members and visitors of all belt levels train together, drill, roll, and shake hands. It typically attracts between 75 and 125 people every Sunday, with a roughly 60/40 split of no-gi to gi — and yes, it's free. The attendance record was set in 2023 at 220 people.

What happens if I miss a class at Legion?

You don't lose anything. Legion San Diego memberships aren't pay-per-class — your membership is a flat rate regardless of how many classes you attend in a given week. The Beginner Course is structured so missed classes can be made up in adjacent weeks; just talk to your beginner coach about catching up. If you're in the Beginner Course and miss a class, don't worry — you're not the first and you won't be the last. We have systems for making sure you graduate with all of the skills promised.

03

Founder & Instructors

Who is Keenan Cornelius?

Keenan Cornelius is the founder of Legion American Jiu Jitsu and one of the most decorated and influential jiu-jitsu competitors of his generation. He is a multiple-time IBJJF World Champion, ADCC veteran, and the only competitor in modern history to win the Grand Slam at brown belt (Pan, European, World, and Brazilian National titles in the same year). He's known for innovating worm guard, the lapel guard system (lapelguard.com), and a methodical, technical style that has shaped the modern game.

Are there other founders?

The other Legion founder is Miha Perhavec, a Slovenian-born grappler and a judo and jiu-jitsu black belt. He has competed at some of the biggest tournaments in the sport like Polaris and WNO. More recently he wrote a best-selling book called Modern Submission Grappling: A No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Manual. He also created the original curriculum for the 5-Week Beginner Course and has been teaching Judo for Jiu-Jitsu at Legion for over five years.

Is Keenan Cornelius still teaching at Legion?

Yes. Keenan Cornelius continues to teach regularly at Legion San Diego HQ, leading Mon and Wed 6 PM classes. Members can train directly with him most weeks of the year. See his instructor page for current bio and class involvement.

Who are the instructors at Legion San Diego?

Legion San Diego HQ is led by founder Keenan Cornelius and a coaching staff including Miha Perhavec, Fellipe Trovo, Dominique Bell, and Sloan Clymer. Every coach is a black belt — or in rare cases just an upper-rank colored belt — with extensive teaching and competition experience. Each instructor brings a distinctive game and teaching style; see their individual instructor pages for full bios.

Is Legion affiliated with any other organization?

Legion American Jiu-Jitsu is an independent academy, founded by Keenan Cornelius. Legion is its own academy with its own curriculum, its own competition team, and a very small group of semi-affiliated gyms owned by Keenan's black belts.

Have Legion's instructors competed at IBJJF, ADCC, or WNO?

Yes. Multiple Legion San Diego coaches and members are active or former competitors at the highest levels — IBJJF World Championships, ADCC, WNO, Combat Jiu-Jitsu, and EBI. Keenan Cornelius is a multiple IBJJF World Champion and ADCC veteran. Other coaches and members have competed at IBJJF Pans, Worlds, Masters, and major no-gi events. Most recently, coach Paige Clymer has won both No-Gi Europeans and ADCC West Coast Trials.

Can I take a private lesson with Keenan Cornelius?

Yes. Keenan Cornelius offers private lessons at Legion San Diego when his schedule allows. Privates with Keenan are in high demand and book up quickly — we recommend reaching out well in advance. Email [email protected] or ask the front desk to be added to the inquiry list. Pricing reflects his world-champion-level coaching.

04

Adult Beginner Specifics

What is Legion's 5-Week Beginner Course exactly?

Legion San Diego's 5-Week Beginner Course is a structured 10-class introduction to jiu-jitsu, designed by Legion's coaching team and refined over thousands of students. The curriculum compresses what most academies teach in 4–6 months into 5 weeks: foundational positions (mount, side control, guard, back), foundational submissions, foundational escapes, and how to safely roll. You start alongside other beginners, never thrown into a mixed-experience class, and finish prepared for Fundamentals.

When does Legion's next Beginner Course start?

Legion San Diego runs new Beginner Course cohorts on a rolling basis — typically a new course starts every 2–4 weeks. Call 858-888-1815 for the next start date. Spots are limited per cohort to keep the coaching ratio tight, so booking 1–2 weeks ahead is the norm.

What if I miss a week of the 5-Week Beginner Course?

Missing a class isn't a problem. Every student enrolled in the 5-Week Beginner Course receives video recordings of what was taught. Students also get a 15- to 30-minute window after each class for Q&A with the coaches, including the Judo for Jiu-Jitsu class every Saturday with Miha Perhavec. Then in the Fundamentals program, all of the lessons and topics from the Beginner Course are revisited and taught again with more detail.

Can I do Legion's Beginner Course twice?

Typically our students don't repeat the Beginner Course unless they had some kind of gap between their continuation in the Fundamentals program and the Beginner Course graduation. However, we are always flexible and listening to our students' needs, so it could be an option.

I've trained somewhere else — do I still have to do the Beginner Course at Legion?

Not necessarily. If you've trained jiu-jitsu at another legitimate academy, you can join Fundamentals directly — Legion San Diego doesn't make experienced students restart. We'll have you attend a class so a coach can see your level, then place you in the right slot. The Beginner Course is built for true beginners; if you're past that, we don't waste your time. That said, many people — including some who reached almost blue belt and then took a break — feel like they have large holes in their game. In those cases we very much encourage them to do the Beginner Course as well.

I've watched a lot of YouTube — can I skip the Beginner Course?

Watching jiu-jitsu and training jiu-jitsu are different sports. Even members who've consumed years of YouTube content benefit from Legion San Diego's 5-Week Beginner Course because the format builds the muscle memory, partner sensitivity, and live application that video alone can't. That said, if you've trained on the mats elsewhere, talk to a coach about going straight to Fundamentals.

I'm older, overweight, or out of shape — is the Beginner Course right for me?

Yes, emphatically. Legion San Diego's Beginner Course is designed exactly for people starting from zero, regardless of age or fitness. We have students starting in their 50s and 60s, students 30+ pounds overweight, students returning from major surgeries, and students who haven't worked out in 20 years. Jiu-jitsu meets you where you are. That's not marketing — that's the day-to-day reality of the room.

Is Legion's Beginner Course gi or no-gi?

Legion's Beginner Course is in the gi.

How does the Beginner Course's '5 months of skills in 5 weeks' claim actually work?

It works because the Legion San Diego Beginner Course removes randomness. Instead of dropping you into a general class and hoping you absorb the curriculum, you start with a deliberate 10-class sequence — taught in order, with other beginners, by coaches who have taught more beginners than anyone in the city, the state, perhaps even the world in the last few years. The second key is sparring: the Beginner Course features controlled specific sparring for most of it and naturally culminates in controlled live rolls. The result: you build the same foundational skill base in 5 weeks that most random-class students build in 4–6 months.

05

Kids Program

What's the youngest age accepted in Legion's Kids Program?

Legion San Diego's Kids Program starts at age 4. The youngest students train in age-grouped classes designed around how 4–6 year-olds actually learn — short attention spans, lots of movement, and lots of fun. We don't accept students younger than 4 because we want the experience to be positive, not frustrating, for the child.

Do you offer a free trial class for kids?

Yes. Legion San Diego's Kids Program offers not only a free trial class but also a free intro class with one of our most experienced instructors. That way your child can get comfortable before doing a group class. We offer free uniform rentals for both. All you have to do is schedule a time for our intro class — either through our online booking link or by calling 858-888-1815.

How are Legion's kids classes different from adult classes?

Legion San Diego's kids classes run on age-appropriate curriculum — shorter attention windows, more game-based teaching, and emphatic focus on safety, respect, and self-control. Coaches use language and pacing built for the age group. A 5-year-old and an 11-year-old don't train together because their developmental needs are completely different. The technical content is real jiu-jitsu, but how it's delivered is built for kids.

What's the student-to-instructor ratio in Legion's kids classes?

Legion San Diego has almost ten coaches and assistant coaches available for our kids' program, which means there is plenty of supervision.

Does Legion teach anti-bullying skills for kids?

Yes. Anti-bullying is woven into Legion San Diego's Kids Program curriculum at every level. We teach kids how to recognize bullying, how to protect themselves and others without escalation, how to use words first, and how to physically defend themselves only when there's no other option. The confidence kids gain from jiu-jitsu often makes them less likely to be targeted in the first place.

How does Legion handle a nervous, shy, or neurodivergent child?

Legion San Diego coaches work with nervous, shy, autistic, ADHD, and otherwise neurodivergent kids regularly — and we've seen the program become genuinely transformative for many of them. Our approach: low pressure on day one, pair them with a patient coach or buddy, let them set their own pace, and celebrate small wins. Talk to us before class about your child's specific needs and we'll plan accordingly. We have worked extensively with SDRC, who are a great partner.

Does Legion offer kids birthday parties or summer camps?

Legion does not currently offer birthday parties; however, we do occasional movie nights for the kids and other themed events. In 2026 we are also organizing not one but two summer camps — full info available on our camp page.

How does the kids belt promotion path work?

Legion San Diego's youth belt path runs from white through green, with stripes (degrees) at each level. Promotions are based on consistent training, technical progress, behavior, and time on the mat. We published a Kids Promotion Guide that walks parents through what's expected at each rank so promotions are never a mystery.

Can siblings train together at Legion or do they have to be in separate age groups?

Siblings train in their respective age groups so the curriculum matches their development, but they often see each other at family open mat times and after-class moments. Many Legion San Diego families have multiple kids enrolled, and we offer family discounts to make multi-child enrollment more affordable.

Can parents watch their kids' class at Legion?

Yes. Legion San Diego has a viewing area where parents can watch kids classes. Most kids do best when parents watch from a distance rather than coaching from the sideline — give the coaches the floor and your kid will progress faster. Phones are fine; on-mat coaching from non-instructors is not. For the youngest kids' group, as kids are becoming more comfortable, parents can be close to the mat to provide extra encouragement while it is needed.

What's the dress code for kids at Legion?

Legion San Diego kids wear a clean gi to all gi classes. New kids members get a Legion gi as part of the program. For no-gi-style days, kids wear a rash guard and shorts (no zippers, no metal). Hair tied back, nails trimmed, no jewelry. We provide a checklist at sign-up so the first day is easy.

06

Belt System & Promotions

How does the Jiu Jitsu belt system work?

Adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu uses five primary belts: white, blue, purple, brown, and black. Promotion is based on a combination of time on the mat, technical skill, character, and contribution to the academy. There is no fixed test — promotions are earned through consistent training, which is why a blue belt at one academy might take 18 months and at another 4 years. At Legion San Diego, promotions are awarded by the coaching team based on what we see on the mat.

How long does it take to get a blue belt at Legion?

There's no set timeline. Most consistently training Legion San Diego members earn their blue belt in roughly 1.5 to 3 years, depending on training frequency, prior experience, and individual progression. Some get there faster, some take longer — and neither is wrong. The blue belt is awarded when the coaches see consistent technical fluency in fundamental positions, not at a fixed milestone.

Why doesn't Legion give stripes to colored belts?

Legion San Diego only awards stripes to white belts — not to blue, purple, or brown belts. The reason: at the white-belt level, the gap between a fresh white belt and a four-stripe white belt is enormous, so stripes help training partners pair appropriately. At higher belts, the variance is smaller and stripes become more performative than functional. The coaches and the experience speak for themselves.

How does the kids belt system work at Legion?

Legion San Diego uses the youth jiu-jitsu belt structure: white, gray, yellow, orange, and green for kids under 16. Each belt has degrees (stripes) within it and a specific curriculum focus. We also publish a Kids Promotion Guide so parents can see exactly what's expected at each level.

Are Legion belts recognized by IBJJF?

Yes. Legion San Diego ranks are awarded under the lineage of Keenan Cornelius, currently a 3rd-degree certified black belt. Your belt is valid for IBJJF, ADCC, and any major tournament organization. If you compete and need rank verification, the front desk can provide documentation.

Who awards belts at Legion San Diego?

Belts at Legion San Diego are awarded collaboratively by the head coaching staff — Keenan Cornelius and the senior instructors — based on what they observe on the mats, supported by attendance and progression data tracked through our member system. Promotions happen at scheduled gi class events throughout the year; members who train exclusively no-gi can be promoted in no-gi classes.

Can I keep my current belt if I came from another academy?

Yes. If you've trained at another academy, Legion San Diego honors your existing rank. We don't "reset" belts. If you're a transfer student, mention your previous academy and rank when you book your first class.

Does Legion follow a curriculum or do I figure it out myself?

Legion San Diego runs a structured curriculum through the 5-Week Beginner Course, and Fundamentals classes follow a rotating week-by-week curriculum that covers the major positions of jiu-jitsu in a deliberate cycle. Intermediate-Advanced classes have more flexibility, with each instructor running deeper technical themes. You're never "on your own" figuring out what to learn next.

07

Safety, Hygiene & Injuries

Is jiu-jitsu safe?

Jiu-jitsu is among the safest combat sports because it's grappling-based — there's no striking, no concussions, and you can tap to end a position before injury occurs. Most injuries that do happen in jiu-jitsu are in live sparring, not technique drilling, and Legion San Diego's coaching style emphasizes injury prevention from day one. With smart training partners and instructors who watch the room, the risk profile is comparable to or lower than recreational basketball.

How common are injuries at Legion San Diego?

Serious injuries at Legion San Diego are uncommon. Bumps, bruises, and minor strains happen — that's true of every contact sport — but our beginner curriculum, coaching staff, and culture all explicitly prioritize partner safety. We coach beginners to tap early, roll with the right partners, and skip rounds when their body needs rest. New members worried about injury risk are usually pleasantly surprised at how controlled the room feels. We also have a few techniques on a banned techniques list, as they are exceptionally dangerous.

What's Legion's hygiene policy?

Legion San Diego has a strict, non-negotiable hygiene policy: clean gi, clean body, short fingernails and toenails, no open cuts on the mat, and no training when you're sick or have any visible skin condition. Our full Hygiene Commandments page covers the details. The mats are cleaned multiple times per day and after every class.

Do I need to trim my nails before training jiu-jitsu?

Yes. Trimmed fingernails and toenails are required to train at Legion San Diego. Long nails cut training partners and yourself, especially in scrambles and grip exchanges. If you forget, the front desk has clippers — don't be embarrassed; everyone has done it.

What if I have long hair — do I need to tie it back?

Long hair must be tied back with a soft hair tie before stepping on the mats at Legion San Diego. Hard clips, metal pins, or beads are not allowed because they can scratch partners. A simple elastic tie works perfectly.

Can I train at Legion with a beard?

Yes. Beards are completely fine at Legion San Diego — many members have them, including some of our coaches. Just keep it clean and conditioned. Mustache wax and beard balm are not required equipment.

Can I train if I have a skin condition like ringworm or staph?

No. Legion San Diego's policy is firm: any active or suspected skin condition (ringworm, staph, MRSA, herpes, impetigo, severe eczema with open lesions) keeps you off the mats until cleared. This protects you and everyone else. If you suspect something, see a doctor first; once you're cleared and the area is fully healed, you're back on the mats. Our full hygiene page covers this in detail.

What's Legion's policy on training while sick?

If you're contagious — fever, flu, cough, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea, COVID, anything similar — stay home. Legion San Diego asks members to skip class until they're at least 24 hours symptom-free. Pushing through and showing up sick gets your training partners sick and gets a third of the room sick by week's end.

What happens if I get hurt during a Legion class?

If you're injured during a Legion San Diego class, your coach will pause class and assess. For minor issues, our front desk has ice and basic first aid. For anything more serious, we follow standard incident protocol and help you arrange medical care. We document every incident, however small, so we can spot patterns and improve safety.

Do I need health insurance to train at Legion?

No. Health insurance isn't required to train at Legion San Diego, though we recommend any member without insurance consider basic coverage given that injuries, while uncommon, can happen in any physical sport. Your sign-up paperwork includes a standard liability waiver and assumption of risk.

Are the mats at Legion cleaned regularly?

Yes. Legion San Diego mats are cleaned and disinfected multiple times per day with hospital-grade disinfectant, plus a deep clean weekly. Between morning and evening sessions, the staff sweep, mop, and re-disinfect. We treat mat hygiene the way a kitchen treats food prep — non-negotiable.

Can I train at Legion with a prior injury or medical condition?

In most cases, yes. Legion San Diego has members training around old surgeries, joint replacements, prior back issues, asthma, heart conditions, and diabetes. The right approach is to tell your coach what you're working with on day one so we can guide partner selection and modify positions where needed. If you have a serious medical condition, get clearance from your doctor first.

08

Trial Class & Your First Day

What should I expect on my first day at Legion?

Your first day at Legion San Diego starts with a friendly check-in at the front desk, where we'll get you signed in and answer any pre-class questions. You'll change into a gi or no-gi gear in our changing rooms, step onto the mats, and be paired with an instructor or coach who walks you through the warm-up, drilling, and your first techniques. There is zero pressure to spar on day one. Most beginners leave their first class smiling and surprised at how welcoming the room is.

How early should I arrive for my first Legion class?

Arrive 15–20 minutes before your first class at Legion San Diego. That gives you time to fill out our waiver, get changed, ask any final questions, and get on the mats without rushing. Our address is 7550 Miramar Rd, Suite 330, San Diego, CA 92126. Parking is on-site and free. If you're running late, just call 858-888-1815 and we'll work it out.

Where do I park at Legion San Diego?

Legion San Diego has plenty of free on-site parking at our 7550 Miramar Rd location. Overflow parking is available on the side and behind the building. The lot rarely fills up except during peak evening classes, so most members find a spot within 30 seconds of pulling in.

What if I'm nervous or out of shape — will I be okay at Legion?

Absolutely. Lots of Legion San Diego beginners arrive nervous and out of peak shape — that's the whole reason the 5-Week Beginner Course exists. Our beginner curriculum is built specifically for first-day humans, not athletes. You'll work at your own pace, partner with other beginners, and be coached by instructors who started in the same place you're starting. Coming in unfit isn't a problem.

Will I get hurt on my first day at Legion?

Almost certainly not. Beginner-level classes at Legion San Diego are intentionally low-intensity, low-impact, and highly supervised. There is no live sparring on day one. You'll learn how to move on the mats safely, how to fall without getting hurt, and how to drill technique with a partner. Injuries do happen in jiu-jitsu over time, but they're rare in the Beginner Course and rarer still on day one.

Do I have to spar on my first day at Legion?

No. Free sparring (also called "rolling") is not part of your first day at Legion San Diego, and not part of the 5-Week Beginner Course in general. We introduce live training gradually — only after you've built the foundational movement, posture, and safety skills to do it without getting hurt. When you do start rolling, you control intensity and you can always tap or pause. All classes (including the first one) include some element of live training, but we start off with controlled specific sparring first.

I don't know anyone at Legion — what do I do when I show up?

Walk up to the front desk and say "It's my first class." That's literally all it takes. The front desk will introduce you to the coach, and the coach will pair you with a friendly partner. Legion San Diego has a culture deliberately built around making new people feel welcome — almost everyone in the room has been the new person at some point and remembers what that felt like. One of the massive benefits of the 5-Week Beginner Course is that everyone is new, so everyone is having the same experience and often people make friends on the spot during the first class.

Will an instructor pair me with a partner at Legion?

Typically we let people select their own training partners; however, in certain cases the instructors may make some changes because it is their job to carefully supervise the class and make sure that there are no huge size or skill discrepancies. They have a lot of experience in preventing injury as well as matching personality.

Can I bring a friend or family member to watch my first class?

Yes. Family and friends are welcome to watch from our viewing area at the Legion San Diego HQ. It's a great way for parents, partners, or curious friends to get a feel for what training looks like before committing. Just let the front desk know they're with you when you check in.

Do I need to sign a waiver before my first class at Legion?

Yes. All Legion San Diego students sign a standard liability and assumption-of-risk waiver before stepping on the mats. We send the digital waiver when you book your trial so you can complete it ahead of time, but if you don't get to it before arriving, we'll have you fill it out at the front desk during check-in. It takes 2 minutes.

Is there a shower or changing room at Legion?

Yes. Legion San Diego has men's and women's changing rooms with showers at our HQ on Miramar Road. The men's room has a whopping 9 showers. Bring a towel and toiletries; we'll handle everything else. Most members shower up after evening classes before heading home.

Is there a viewing area or place to wait at Legion?

Yes. Legion San Diego has a viewing area where parents, friends, and waiting members can sit and watch class. There's also a small lounge in the lobby with seating, water, and Wi-Fi — useful if you arrive early or have a kid in class while you wait.

09

Pricing, Billing & Contracts

How much does Legion San Diego cost per month?

The honest answer: it depends. Pricing varies by the age and program of the participant, goals, frequency of training, and length of membership. Memberships start at around $175. We offer a free orientation for everyone where we find the best program for you or your child and present all of the pricing options.

Do you offer a free trial class at Legion?

For some programs. For kids and adults with several months of experience, we do. For complete beginners, we offer a better alternative — a free Orientation and potentially a Beginner Course.

Is Legion membership month-to-month or do I have to sign a contract?

Legion San Diego offers month-to-month, 6-month, and 12-month options so you can pick the commitment that matches your life. Month-to-month memberships have no long-term obligation; longer-term plans come with a discounted monthly rate. Paid-in-full memberships are the most economical. Either way, you can pause or cancel if life circumstances change. Ask at sign-up about which structure fits where you are right now.

Is there a sign-up fee or initiation fee at Legion?

No. Sign-up fees are made up as a way for jiu-jitsu gyms to take more money in exchange for providing no additional value. At Legion there are no sign-up or initiation fees.

Do you offer family or sibling discounts at Legion?

Yes. Legion San Diego offers a family discount. This makes it significantly more affordable for families to train side-by-side, which is one of the most common (and most rewarding) ways our members train. Ask at sign-up — we'll calculate the family rate against current pricing.

Do you offer a military, first responder, or law enforcement discount?

Yes. Legion San Diego offers a 10% military discount on monthly membership for active-duty Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen, and Guardians. We also offer the same discounts for first responders and law enforcement. Just bring a current ID at sign-up. Given our location near MCAS Miramar, a meaningful share of our members are active-duty service members — see our dedicated Marines page for full details.

Can I freeze or pause my Legion membership?

Yes. Legion San Diego allows membership freezes for travel, deployment, injury, or major life changes. Freezes can be requested through the front desk or your member account. Active-duty members deploying overseas are handled with full flexibility — we hold your spot and your rank. Email [email protected] or call 858-888-1815 to start a freeze.

What's Legion's cancellation policy?

You can cancel your Legion San Diego membership any time. Month-to-month members give 7 days notice and aren't charged for the next billing cycle. Longer-term contract members cancel under the terms agreed at sign-up. There's no cancellation fee for ending month-to-month, and we don't try to talk you out of it — if jiu-jitsu isn't fitting your life right now, the door is open whenever you're ready to come back.

Do you offer refunds if I'm not satisfied?

Legion San Diego stands behind the 5-Week Beginner Course with a satisfaction guarantee. If you come to a minimum of one class per week and the course does not meet your expectation, we will provide you with a 100% refund.

Are private lessons available at Legion and how much do they cost?

Yes. Private lessons at Legion San Diego are available with most of our coaching staff. Privates are the fastest way to break a plateau, prepare for a competition, or work through a specific position. Email [email protected] to inquire about scheduling and current rates with a specific coach.

What are Legion's drop-in rates for visitors?

Drop-in classes at Legion San Diego are $55 per day, $65 per class, $195 for a week pass, or $350 for a month pass. Visitors who train regularly elsewhere are warmly welcomed at our HQ at 7550 Miramar Rd, Suite 330. We don't require advance booking for most classes, but we do ask that visitors fill out our Visitor Information form so we can verify your home academy, rank, and confirm which classes match your level. See the dedicated visitor page for full details.

Does Legion accept Active&Fit, Tivity, or corporate wellness benefits?

Legion isn't currently in the Active&Fit or Tivity networks, but many of our members get reimbursed through their employer's wellness benefit. We're happy to provide an itemized receipt or letter of medical necessity for submission.

Visiting Legion

I'm visiting San Diego — can I drop in to Legion?

Yes. Legion San Diego HQ welcomes visitors from around the world — we have visitors most days of the week, including notable competitors, traveling professionals, and everyone else. Our address is 7550 Miramar Rd, Suite 330, San Diego, CA 92126. Have a look at our visitor information page or call 858-888-1815 to coordinate your visit.

Do I need to book in advance to drop in at Legion?

Most classes don't require advance booking, but we strongly recommend filling out the visitor form ahead of time so we know your rank, home academy, and which classes match your level. We do not allow drop-ins into the 5-Week Beginner Course.

Is there a discount for week-long Legion visitors?

Yes. Legion San Diego offers a discounted week-pass for visitors training multiple days in a row. The pass is $195 — significantly less than a per-class drop-in. Useful for traveling competitors, military on TAD/TDY, or jiu-jitsu vacationers visiting San Diego.

Does Legion host visiting black belts for seminars or open mat?

Yes. Legion San Diego HQ regularly hosts visiting black belts at Sunday Open Mat and during the week. Our open mat is well-known in the jiu-jitsu community as a place where high-level practitioners come to roll. Equipment & Gear

What gi should I buy for Legion?

If you're starting through Legion San Diego's 5-Week Beginner Course, you don't need to buy a gi — one is included as part of the course. After that, our "clean gi" policy means any clean, well-fitted gi works regardless of brand or color. Many members eventually buy a Legion-branded gi from our shop, both for the look and to support the academy.

Do I need a rashguard, shorts, and mouthguard at Legion?

For gi classes: just a gi and a clean shirt underneath if you prefer, although rashguards definitely work best. For no-gi classes: rashguard and grappling shorts (no pockets, no zippers, no metal). A mouthguard is optional but recommended for all live training. If you don't have gear yet, the Legion shop carries the essentials.

Do I need a mouthguard to train at Legion?

A mouthguard isn't required to train at Legion San Diego, but most members — especially those who roll regularly — wear one. Cheap boil-and-bite mouthguards work fine; custom-fit guards are available from any dentist. Mouthguards become more important once you start live sparring.

Do I need ear guards at Legion?

Ear guards are optional. Some members wear them to prevent cauliflower ear (a common jiu-jitsu and wrestling badge of honor that's actually a chronic injury). If preventing cauliflower ear matters to you, wear them. Many members don't bother. Either choice is normal.

Where can I buy a Legion gi or shirt?

Legion-branded gear — gis, rashguards, shorts, t-shirts, hoodies — is available at the front desk. New gis usually drop quarterly with seasonal designs; check the shop for current stock.

How often should I wash my gi?

Wash your gi after every single training session — full stop. This is non-negotiable at Legion San Diego, both for hygiene and out of respect for your training partners. Cold or warm water, mild detergent, hang dry to preserve fit. Mildewed or smelly gis will be sent home.

Can I tape my fingers or wear a knee brace at Legion?

Yes. Athletic tape on fingers, knees, and ankles is fine — common, even, especially for gi grippers. Hard knee braces with metal hinges should be padded over to avoid hurting partners. If you're rehabbing an injury, talk to your coach about modifications.

Comparisons & Positioning

How is Legion different from other San Diego jiu-jitsu gyms?

Legion San Diego stands out across four dimensions: the founder (Keenan Cornelius, a multiple-time IBJJF World Champion who teaches at the academy), the curriculum (a 5-Week Beginner Course that compresses months of foundational learning into a structured arc), the schedule (gi and no-gi classes every morning and night, plus a bustling kids program), and the culture (a visitor-friendly, technically rigorous, no-ego training environment that has built a 100+-strong daily training community). Most San Diego gyms specialize in one of these dimensions; Legion delivers all four. Another distinguishing feature is our gigantic 5,000 sqft mat space, which means you don't have to bump into people constantly or start from the knees.

Is Legion good for beginners specifically?

Legion San Diego is built for beginners. The 5-Week Beginner Course is among the most thoughtfully designed beginner programs in jiu-jitsu — it's the front door for the academy and where the majority of members start. Coaches who teach the Beginner Course have close to 5 years of experience each, specifically in leveling up beginners.

Is Legion good for competitors specifically?

Yes. Legion San Diego has plenty of competitors. At the time of this writing, Paige Clymer had just won ADCC West Coast Trials with Breylor Grout taking 3rd place.

Is Legion good for hobbyists who don't want to compete?

Yes. The clear majority of Legion San Diego members are hobbyists who train for fitness, mental health, self-defense, and community — never with any intention to compete. The room has space for both lifelong hobbyists and active competitors, and they train alongside each other respectfully. Competing is welcomed but never required.

Is jiu-jitsu better than karate, Muay Thai, or wrestling for self-defense?

For most real-world self-defense scenarios — where you're trying to control a situation without striking — jiu-jitsu has compelling advantages over striking arts. Karate and Muay Thai teach you to hit; jiu-jitsu teaches you to control, restrain, and resolve a confrontation without escalation. Wrestling overlaps with jiu-jitsu's takedown game but lacks submissions. The honest answer: jiu-jitsu plus some striking awareness is the gold standard. Many Legion members cross-train accordingly.

Should I do jiu-jitsu or judo? Or both?

If you're picking one, jiu-jitsu is the broader skill set for most adults — extensive ground game, submissions, and a safer learning curve. Judo specializes in standing throws, which is a legitimate art but harder on the body long-term and less applicable to most self-defense scenarios. Many serious grapplers train both. At Legion San Diego we focus on jiu-jitsu, but the takedown game we teach borrows freely from judo and wrestling.

Should I start with gi or no-gi jiu-jitsu?

Either works, but most coaches — including Legion San Diego's — recommend starting with gi. The gi slows the pace, creates more grip-based decision points, and builds technical fluency that transfers to no-gi. Once you have solid fundamentals, training both gi and no-gi is the strongest path. That said, training just no-gi is perfectly fine too — we have members who've done both their whole career and members who've trained exclusively no-gi for years.

Lifestyle, Fitness & Mental Health Benefits

Will jiu-jitsu help me lose weight?

Yes, for most people training consistently. A typical Legion San Diego class burns 500–800 calories, and members training 3+ times per week routinely see meaningful body composition changes within 8–12 weeks. The bigger lever is that jiu-jitsu makes exercise something you actually look forward to, which solves the consistency problem that breaks most weight-loss plans.

How fit do I need to be to start jiu-jitsu at Legion?

You don't need any specific fitness level to start at Legion San Diego. Our 5-Week Beginner Course is built for true zeros — people who haven't worked out in years, people 30+ pounds overweight, people in their 50s+ starting fresh. The class itself becomes your fitness program. After 4–6 weeks, you'll notice you're stronger, leaner, and more mobile.

Will jiu-jitsu help my back pain or mobility?

For many people, yes. Jiu-jitsu develops hip mobility, spinal flexibility, and core strength — three areas where most adult back pain originates. That said, jiu-jitsu can also aggravate existing back issues if trained recklessly. At Legion San Diego, we coach beginners to modify positions around prior injuries. If your back pain is severe, get medical clearance first.

How does jiu-jitsu compare to CrossFit or Orangetheory for fitness?

Jiu-jitsu builds different fitness than CrossFit or Orangetheory. CrossFit and Orangetheory are pure fitness programs optimized for calorie burn and conditioning. Jiu-jitsu builds functional strength, body awareness, problem-solving under stress, and a unique kind of muscular endurance — plus the mental health benefits of community and skill mastery. Many Legion San Diego members come from a CrossFit background and find jiu-jitsu more sustainable long-term.

Is jiu-jitsu good for mental health?

Many practitioners — including a significant number of Legion San Diego members — describe jiu-jitsu as the single most beneficial thing they've added to their mental health. The combination of physical exertion, full presence (you can't doom-scroll while someone is trying to choke you), community, and skill mastery delivers a psychological reset that other forms of exercise rarely match.

Will jiu-jitsu help with anxiety or ADHD?

Anecdotally, often yes. Jiu-jitsu requires complete present-moment focus, which gives anxious or ADHD-prone brains a structured break from rumination. The physical exertion drives down stress hormones; the mental engagement gives the mind something concrete to wrestle with. We're not making medical claims, but Legion San Diego has many members for whom training has been a major part of their mental health management.

How long until I see physical results from jiu-jitsu?

Most Legion San Diego beginners notice fitness gains within 3–4 weeks (better breath, less fatigue) and visible body composition changes within 8–12 weeks of consistent training. Skill progression is slower — meaningful technical development takes months and years — and that's part of why jiu-jitsu stays interesting for decades.

Will jiu-jitsu interfere with my other sport like lifting, running, or surfing?

Jiu-jitsu pairs well with most other sports. Lifters often see jiu-jitsu support recovery and conditioning. Runners benefit from the rotational and lateral demands they don't otherwise get. Surfers and other San Diego watermen find jiu-jitsu builds the core stability and balance that translates directly to the water. The main caveat: if you're competing in another sport, schedule rest days.

MMA & Cross-Training

Does Legion offer MMA classes?

Legion San Diego is a dedicated jiu-jitsu academy and doesn't offer MMA, striking, or cage-work classes. We focus exclusively on the gi and no-gi grappling that has made the academy known. However, one of our coaches — Sloan Clymer — is a pro MMA fighter, and 2 of his students are doing amateur MMA as well, currently with great success.

Does Legion offer striking, wrestling, or judo?

Legion San Diego's takedown training borrows from wrestling and judo, especially in Intermediate-Advanced and No-Gi classes. Coach Miha teaches a Judo for Jiu-Jitsu class every Saturday, but that focuses on takedowns for jiu-jitsu, not ranking up in a pure judo system. We don't offer dedicated striking or judo programs. If you want full wrestling or judo training in addition to Jiu Jitsu, several excellent academies in San Diego specialize in those — we're happy to point you toward them.

Is Legion good for someone training for MMA?

Yes, for the jiu-jitsu side of an MMA career. Legion San Diego provides world-class grappling training under Keenan Cornelius and the coaching staff. MMA fighters using Legion typically pair the jiu-jitsu training with a striking academy in San Diego. We've had members fight in regional MMA promotions and at higher levels using Legion as their grappling base.

Can I cross-train at Legion if I'm a member at another academy?

Yes.
