A simple format with maximum good vibes and excellent rounds. Every Sunday. Never canceled, not even for Christmas, New Year, or National Donut Day. Strictly 18+, no exceptions.
How Big Is Legion Open Mat?
We have 5,800 sqft of mats. That gives 100+ people ample space to do rounds, and that's also the average attendance. On a slower day, expect about 70 people.
Sparring is more fun when you're not worried about bumping into people. That's why we laid down a ridiculous amount of mats: even with 100+ rolling, the rounds stay safe and fun.

Gi, No-Gi, Or Both?
Both. The open mat draws plenty of gi and no-gi participants, so there are enough rounds for both styles. Some people bring both uniforms and mix it up.
Is There a Uniform Policy?
No. At Legion we vehemently reject uniform policies. Your uniform has to be clean, that's the only super important rule. Gi color, patches, we don't care. A rashguard is required, and pants or shorts without pockets.

How Do I Check In For The Open Mat?
Simple: we need some basic information from you and a signed liability waiver. You can do it on our iPads at the academy, but the fastest way is to handle it before you arrive.

Who Is The Open Mat NOT For?
The open mat is not for people with no jiu-jitsu experience. Rolling experience is required for the safety of everyone involved. It's also not the place to show new friends what jiu-jitsu is all about, the space is better used for rolling.

Why Does Legion Host a Free Open Mat?
We spend 6 days a week providing a premium jiu-jitsu experience to our members with carefully curated classes and courses. On Sundays, everyone gets to experience the vibe at Legion at no cost.
It fosters a more open San Diego jiu-jitsu community, where the love for jiu-jitsu comes before politics and drama. This is the American jiu-jitsu way.

Do you guys have gi rentals?
Yes, you can easily rent a gi. The fee is $20.
Does Keenan roll at open mat?
Yes. Just like our other instructors, Keenan can be seen rolling at open mat, both gi and no-gi.
Is there a Legion open mat for kids?
At 11 AM on Sundays we host our Kids Competition Class, which is kind of an open mat for kids. It has a bit more structure and is free for all kids with several months of experience. The regular 12 PM open mat itself is strictly 18+.
Can you sign up for a membership at open mat?
Yes, you can. Our front desk staff can help you with that.
