What It Is

No-Gi Vs Gi

Same art, different grips. No-gi is jiu-jitsu trained in a rashguard and shorts, so nobody can grab cloth. It is the format used in submission grappling, and the format closest to MMA and self-defense.

The Gi

  • Collar, lapel and sleeve grips
  • Slower pace, more control and pressure
  • Chokes built off the jacket
  • Belt ranks and the traditional structure

No-Gi

  • Grips on wrists, necks, heads and legs
  • Faster scrambles, more wrestling
  • Leg entanglements and body locks
  • Closest to MMA and self-defense

Train both and your game gets bigger. Plenty of Legion members hit gi classes and no-gi classes in the same week.

Who It Is For

Is No-Gi Right For You?

01

Complete Beginners

Start with the 5-Week Beginner Course, then add no-gi. Every no-gi class on the schedule is an all levels class, so you are never in the wrong room.

02

Wrestlers & MMA

If you already wrestle or train striking, no-gi is the fastest bridge into jiu-jitsu. Your takedowns and scrambles carry straight over.

03

Gi Players Adding A Game

Blue belt and up who want leg entanglements, body locks and a faster pace to sit alongside the gi curriculum.

04

No-Gi Questions, Answered

Do I need experience to start no-gi at Legion?

No. Every adult no-gi class on our schedule is an all levels class. If you have never trained before, book a free orientation and we will point you at the right first class.

What do I wear to a no-gi class?

Shorts without pockets, zips or buttons, and a rashguard or fitted athletic shirt. Nothing to buy up front and nothing to grab on the mat. A mouthguard is a good idea.

Should I train gi or no-gi first?

Either works. The 5-Week Beginner Course runs in the gi and gives you the base positions fastest. If you come from wrestling or MMA, no-gi will feel more familiar from day one. Most Legion members end up doing both.

How long are the no-gi classes?

It depends on the slot. The morning and evening all levels classes run 90 minutes. The late evening No-Gi All Levels class and the Saturday games class run 60 minutes.

Do you have a no-gi class for kids?

Yes. Kids All Levels No-Gi runs Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00pm to 5:00pm with Rafaela Guedes, inside our kids program for ages 4 to 14.

How much does it cost to train no-gi?

Pricing at Legion depends on things like experience level, membership length and training frequency, so we go over it in detail in the free orientation. There is more on the membership pricing page.

Where in San Diego is the academy?

Legion is at 7550 Miramar Rd, Suite 330, San Diego, CA 92126, in Mira Mesa, with 6,000 sqft of mats. Members drive in from Sorrento Valley, Miramar, Scripps Ranch and across the county.
