This past Friday, 8 Legionnaires ranging from blue to black belt, took the stage at the Westin Hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter as part of Fight2Win 209. Fight2Win is a show that bills itself as the “biggest party in grappling”. They put on 1-vs-1 matching up local and regional competitors. Team Legion AJJ wins totaled 7 and 1 we suffered one loss. Here is a summary of this epic conquest at one of the most fun events on the jiu jitsu scene.

Blue Belt

In the first match for Legion AJJ, blue belt Tu Dang made his debut on the superfight stage. He had a good showing but lost the referee’s decision.

Purple belts

Following this match, 4 purple belts took the stage. Our assistant kids coach Tyler McKay got a dominant victory as did Sohan Kandadi. They both competed in the gi and secured the first two wins for team Legion.

Following them, Alan Acre and David Navillat both competed in nogi matches. Alan performed exceptionally well, taking on a favored opponent, yet dominating him. Both Alan and David joined our nogi program and are reaping the benefits (and legs).

Brown Belts

After our purple belts took us to 4-1, it was time for the brown belts to take the stage. However, these two black belts could be black belts at just about any other academy.

Breylor Grout is on the heels of a solid performance against the Absolute BLACK BELT World Champion, Nicholas Meregali. On Friday he took a step down in competition against a fellow brown belt, who he submitted in just over a minute of the action with a beautiful armbar.

Talk about punching above your weight, Paige Borras, the ADCC 2022 Alternate and highly ranked (among black belts) competitor, went out to the stage next. She also secured a win by arm bar after the first scuffle. Paige is now waiting for a potential opportunity to participants in the most high profile jiu jitsu tournament ever – ADCC 2022.

Black Belt

In the final bout for team Legion AJJ, Head Beginner Course Instructor Miha Perhavec faced off against another dangerous black belt. With the full support of the electric crowd behind him he won the match by decision.

That pushed the number of Legion AJJ wins, not a shabby performance. Best of all the Fight2Win show brought newer members of the academy in contact with the kinds of high-level matches that the competitors and coaches walk into weekend after weekend.
