Dear Parents,
Summer is almost over and the start of school is rapidly approaching. The kids program has grown a bit over these summer months and will likely grow even more in August and September, when parents are looking for new activities for their children alongside the start of the school year.
One thing I love to see is when students introduce themselves to new members of their classes. If your child does this, I will reward them with a Leadership stripe from August to September.

Kids In-House Tournament
Super excited to have another Kids In-House Tournament coming up later this month. The tournament will be on Saturday, August 29th and will start at 9am. Parents that have been to previous tournaments know how much fun it is. New parents, don't hesitate to have your child give competition a try. Our in-house tournament is beginner-friendly, safe, and low pressure. It also only lasts a few hours, so you don't have to spend all day standing around a stinky fairground or a high school gym in some town you've never been to, an hour's drive from your house.
We have 15 students signed up so far. Take advantage now to save on the enrollment fee. A quick note on the brackets: I custom make them for fairness. I know who your kids are, so they will be in the perfect bracket for them and get to compete against their friends and classmates. See you there!

We are planning to have another belt ceremony sometime in mid to late September. The date is pending a few different shipments of Legion kids belts on their way. Once we know, the ceremony will be announced. We appreciate all of your patience.
Student of the Month · July
Kaleia Sofia Tuti
I am excited to announce that every month I will be picking one student from the kids program to be the Student of the Month. This month we are highlighting Kaleia Sofia Tuti, a member of Coach Michelle's class. Kaleia joined the program on June 12th and has already taken 33 classes. In that time she has earned 1 white technique stripe and 4 red Pillar stripes on her white belt.
Consistency is key to jiu-jitsu, and in just a month and a half Kaleia has made jiu-jitsu a habit that she enjoys coming to. Like most of your children, I did an intro lesson with Kaleia back in June. She did an awesome job despite being somewhat hesitant at first and has averaged 5 classes a week since then. She has also built a large collection of Legion gis to help with her daily training schedule, I think she has one in every color at this point, but her black gi is her favorite. Congratulations on being the Student of the Month, Kaleia. We look forward to seeing your continued growth in the program as a model student of Coach Michelle's class.
Pillar of the Month · August
Warrior Spirit
For the month of August students will be working on their Warrior Spirit pillar: Dedication, Discipline, Respect and Grit. The Spotlight Stripe this month is Discipline. Of all the Pillar stripes (16 of them!) Discipline is my favorite. I truly believe that discipline will help your child reach whatever goals they have in life, not just jiu-jitsu.
I will be giving out Discipline stripes all month long, just in time for the start of the school year. What is something you'd like your child to be more disciplined about? If there is anything you want them to work on at home, let me know, and if they show discipline in doing it, they can expect a new red stripe on their belt.
Spotlight Stripes are the one stripe of that pillar which can be earned throughout the entire month, instead of only one week like the other three stripes that make up the pillar.
Launching September 7th
New Parents Classes
It's finally here. On September 7th we are launching a new parents class on the two days that currently lack one: Monday and Wednesday at 5 PM.
These classes are an opportunity for existing parents in the program to train on those days as well, since we know that kids have pretty demanding schedules, which can fluctuate through the year.
But we are also using it as an opportunity to encourage more parents to jump on the mats for the first time. To become familiar with what the kids are learning. To get a workout in, instead of doom scrolling in the lobby or running the A/C in the car. To lead from the front and share jiu-jitsu with the kids.
These classes will launch with 5 weeks of our Beginner Course curriculum before transitioning into the Fundamentals curriculum, which is appropriate for all levels. Talk to me to learn how you can get involved.

Coming This Fall
Legion Champions Club
Many parents have been asking about what we will be doing with the open 4pm time slots. We know exactly what we want to do but still have a few hurdles to get over before we are ready to get things rolling.
The name of this special program is the Legion Champions Club. It is a class I hope every student in our program strives to be a member of. Our current plan is to launch with 1x per week in the fall, then ramp up to 3x per week from there as we build out the program.
I look forward to revealing more in the next newsletter, with a breakdown of why it is called the Champions Club.
