15 Unwritten Rules Every Jiu Jitsu Beginner Needs To Know

Keenan Cornelius & Andris Brunovskis have released what is basically a short instructional on what to do (and what not to do) as a beginner in jiu jitsu. Check it out here.

So you started jiu jitsu and you’ve begun feeling like you’re in peak white belt mode. What is peak white belt mode you ask? Well, it’s kind of the awkward phase of training where you’ve gotten over the initial intimidation of taking part in the class but have started noticing the small whispers and snickers from your coloured belt training partners. This most likely means that your gym (like all jiu jitsu gyms) have some unwritten rules. You may not know what these rules are. And you’re potentially breaking them. Hence the giggles and annoyed responses you might have gotten.

However, at Legion HQ, our instructors understand the struggles of being a white belt. They aim to educate new members on these unwritten rules as much as they can. However, no matter how much education a white belt may receive, there’s always that one person that has a subconscious goal of inappropriately finger jabbing someone in the eyeball or crushing smaller opponents unnecessarily.

The ultimate guide on what to do (and what not to do) as a beginner.

Fortunately, Keenan Cornelius (Head Instructor & Worm Extraordinaire) and Andris Brunovskis (Assistant Head Instructor and Beginner Program Director) have filmed a complete guidebook for beginners. Check out the video below to find out the 15 unwritten rules every beginner should know about.
