After nearly 15 years of training, I can confidently say that Jiu-Jitsu has become an integral part of my life. However, this journey hasn’t always been smooth sailing.

My Near-Breaking Point

I vividly remember a challenging period during my white belt days when I almost quit. During one particular Sunday open mat session, nothing seemed to work in my favor. Training partners I usually dominated were suddenly overwhelming me, leaving me feeling burnt out and frustrated with my apparent lack of progress.

That drive home became a turning point. I decided to implement several changes to my training approach, and the results were transformative. Today, I’m sharing these game-changing strategies that I wish I’d known as a beginner when facing Jiu-Jitsu Plateaus.

Four Essential Tips to Maintain Your BJJ Motivation

1. Leave Your Ego at the Door

Not every training session will be your best performance. Some days you’re the hammer; other days, you’re the nail. The key is accepting this reality and being at peace with both losing rounds and getting tapped.

Transform your mindset by:

– Treating the training room as your experimental laboratory rather than a competition ground

– Focusing on improvement rather than winning

– Selecting one specific skill to develop each class

– Approaching training with a playful, creative mindset instead of treating every roll like a championship final

2. Diversify Your Skillset

When you notice yourself falling into comfortable patterns, challenge yourself to try new approaches:

– If you’re typically a top player, invest time in developing your guard game

– If you always pull guard, spend more time working on your takedowns

– Experiment with different positions and techniques

This variety not only accelerates your learning but also keeps training fresh and engaging. While you don’t need to reinvent yourself every session, regular experimentation helps maintain motivation and enthusiasm, a necessity when smashing through Jiu-Jitsu Plateaus.

3. Build Your Support Network

Having an accountability partner has been crucial during my challenging periods. A strong support system of like-minded training partners can:

– Push you to exceed your limits

– Provide encouragement during tough times

– Create a positive training environment

Remember: to have great training partners, you must be one yourself. Support others when they’re struggling, and help foster a culture of mutual growth and encouragement.

While this might seem self-serving coming from an instructor, private lessons are genuinely one of the most effective ways to accelerate your progress. They offer:
