BIOGRAPHY
Jacob Semsem is a distinguished jiu-jitsu black belt and instructor at Legion American Jiu-Jitsu in San Diego. His journey in the sport is marked by impressive achievements and a unique background that sets him apart in the jiu-jitsu community.
Shortly after making his mark on the international stage by claiming the European Championship title in 2024 and the American National Championship title, he was promoted to blackbelt in 2025. His competitive success is built on a foundation of diverse athletic experience, including a background as a 181lb powerlifter, where he honed his strength and discipline.
Prior to his full-time commitment to jiu-jitsu, Jake pursued academic excellence, graduating in 2021 with a degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. This scientific background informs his analytical approach to jiu-jitsu, allowing him to break down techniques with precision and clarity.
Jacob’s journey with Legion AJJ began in 2020 when he attended a competition camp for the Pan American Championships. Inspired by the experience, he made the bold decision to relocate from his hometown to Southern California, dedicating himself to training full-time at Legion. This move proved transformative, accelerating his progress and competitive success.
As an instructor, Jacob brings a unique blend of competitive insight, scientific reasoning, and a diversity of techniques to his classes. His teaching style emphasizes both the technical intricacies and physical demands of jiu-jitsu, helping students develop a comprehensive skill set. Jacob’s classes are known for their rigorous, analytical approach, balanced with practical application for competition and self-defense scenarios.
Jakeβs journey from powerlifter to Jiujitsu champion exemplifies the transformative power Jiujitsu can have on oneβs life. You can find him on the mat at Legion American Jiujtsu 5 days a week teaching children and adults
However, Tylerβs journey hit a significant bump when he injured his back, requiring surgery that kept him off the mats for 1.5 years. But in true Tyler fashion, he didnβt let that setback stop him. Just five months after his surgery, he worked his way back onto the mats.Β
Being injured and off the mats for so long taught Tyler how to study jiu-jitsu deeply and learn from instructionals. During this time, he delved into Keenanβs Lapel Encyclopedia and decided that Legion was where he wanted to be.
In August 2020, Tyler started training at Legion American Jiu Jitsu, where he quickly made his mark. His passion for teaching and his extensive experience made him a natural fit for helping with the kidsβ program. Today, Tyler is the Director of the Eaglets Program, where he brings his unique blend of educational expertise and jiu-jitsu knowledge to students of all ages and skill levels.
Tyler regularly competes and continues to push himself to new heights, both as a practitioner and as a coach. Heβs not just a teacher; heβs a mentor and a role model for his students, showing them that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible.
Outside the gym, Tyler enjoys hiking, going to the zoo, working out with his wife, savoring good food, and taking long walks with his Siberian Husky, Blue.
Tyler McKayβs story is one of passion, resilience, and dedication. Heβs not just building champions on the mat; heβs helping to shape confident, respectful, and disciplined individuals who carry these values into every aspect of their lives.
