A San Diego Sunday tradition since 2019. A simple format, but maximum good vibes and excellent rounds. We answer all the questions you could possibly have about Legion’s Open Mat.
The Legion Open Mat has never been canceled, even for major holidays, including Christmas, New Year and National Donut Day.
The open mat price of admission is $0.
At Legion, we have 5800 sqft of mats. This gives 100+ people ample space to do rounds. That is also the average attendance. On a slower day, you can expect about 70 people.
Jiu jitsu sparring is more fun when you don’t have to constantly worry about bumping into people, that’s why we laid down a ridiculous amount of mats, so that even with 100+ people, the rolls are still safe and fun.
Our attendance record is more than 206 people from May 2022.
The open mat has both gi participants and nogi participants, ensuring enough rounds for both styles. Some people even bring both uniforms and they mix it up.
The check-in process is very simple. We need some basic information from you and a signed liability waiver.
You can do that on our iPads at the academy or online.
To do it online you have to go to our schedule page, select the open mat and then follow the instructions (via Mindbody). This will make your check-in at the academy a breeze.
No, at Legion we vehemently reject uniform policies. Your uniform has to be clean, that’s the only super important policy. As far as gi color, patches, we don’t care. A rashguard is required as well as pants/shorts without pockets.
The open mat is not for people with no jiu jitsu experience. Rolling experience is required for the safety of everyone involved. It is not a good place to show new friends what jiu jitsu is all about because the space is better used for rolling. For people new to jiu jitsu we really, really, REALLY recommend our World-renowned 5-Week Beginner Course.
Private lessons are not allowed, as well as participants under the age of 16.
We spend 6 days per week providing a premium jiu jitsu experience to our members with carefully curated classes and courses. On Sundays we provide an opportunity for everyone to experience the vibe at Legion at no cost. This also fosters a more open San Diego jiu jitsu community where the love for jiu jitsu comes before politics and drama. This is the American jiu jitsu way.
Besides everything above, common sense, common decency etc. there are a couple simple rules.
No shoes on the mats, no bare feet off the mats.
Feel free to ask anyone to roll, feel free to refuse any roll.
Have fun, it’s mandatory.
Yes, you can easily rent a gi, the fee is $20.
Yes, just like our other instructors, Keenan can be seen rolling at open mat, both gi and nogi.
At 11am on Sundays we host our Kids Competition Class, which is kind of an open mat for kids. It has a bit more structure and is free for all kids with several months of experience.
